The Athens-Clarke County Economic Development Department was established by ordinance of the Mayor and Commission on February 5, 2013.
Our purpose is to be the primary point of contact for industries, large commercial developments, site location consultants, and state economic development organizations interested in developing, expanding, or locating new or expanded businesses in Athens-Clarke County. Our department was created and supported by a partnership formed between:
- The Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County
- The Athens Area Chamber of Commerce
- The Athens-Clarke County Economic Development Authority
- The University of Georgia (UGA)
Our department's sole purpose is to attract and establish new businesses that will create additional jobs and import capital investment to Clarke County, Georgia. As this is a complex and competitive task, the organization is devoted to new business development along with sharing and promoting the numerous economic assets of the area.
Our department also maintains relationships with the many related organizations that play a significant role in the creation and development of new business opportunities. Those relationships include, but are not limited to, Athens Technical College; Georgia Tech; UGA Small Business Center; SBA; Georgia Department of Economic Development; Georgia Power; Georgia EMC; Atlanta Gas Light; CSX Railroad; area business leadership; and others.
We envision Athens-Clarke County as a community with a healthy, diversified economy, where businesses can locate, innovate, grow and prosper, where all residents have opportunities for economic prosperity.
Our mission is to attract, retain, and grow businesses and jobs in Athens-Clarke County and remain an "Open for Business" community.
Athens-Clarke County will excel in job creation, innovation, entrepreneurship, global business, and quality workforce and have a stable and sustainable business friendly environment.
